Back in April, I think, a middle-school kid asked me: "Do you know Geoje yaho?" I did not. I knew Geoje, an island city on Korea's south coast, famous for shipyards. I had no idea what the "yaho" part was. So I searched it on the spot and watched Shorts late into the night. This piece should have run in April. That is when the kid asked. If I had not broken up in April, it probably would have. It did not, and instead I kept watching for days. Somewhere in there, I became a fan. And in the time it took spring to turn into summer, RESCENE went to No. 1 on Melon. Those few days left me two things. One is in the head. This is not just an idol story; it is a clean specimen of how content spreads now. Hence the title: RESCENE is a social phenomenon worth studying. The other is in the chest, and it is a single song. Deja Vu. It became my favorite over those days, and right now it sits at No. 7. I kept asking why this one, and landed here: it is the song that best captures what RESCENE is. The name RESCENE fuses Scene and Scent. One smell can drag a whole past scene back with it. For someone who keeps a different diffuser in every room, that is not an abstraction, and Deja Vu sings exactly that sensation, the feeling of hearing something for the first time and somehow already knowing it. This was the spring I came to love that feeling most. Why the group is called RESCENE, and why that feeling is by design, I come back to later. ## "Geoje, yaho!" It did not start with a song. It started with a joke. In March 2026, a video series appeared on the personal YouTube channel of Won, the leader of the five-member girl group RESCENE. Not the label's official channel. Her own channel, with a deliberately unpolished name that roughly translates to "Hello this is Won nice to meet you." The series: learning Japanese from a former gyaru, filmed with Minami, the group's Japanese member. In the March 20 video, Won looks at Minami in full gyaru styling and jokes that if she showed up like that in Geoje, Won's hometown, the locals would scold her. Minami fires back with a cheer: "Geoje, yaho!" "Yaho" is what Koreans shout from mountaintops, the local "yahoo!" That is the whole meme. A clipped moment started circulating as Shorts, jumped to online communities, and at some point became a catchphrase that schoolkids test adults with. There is a fan channel called "RESCENE to the world." It has 9,040 subscribers. Small. In May it posted a 16-second Short, the birth of the meme, clipped. As of July 24 that Short sits at 2,817,338 views. More than 300 times the channel's subscriber count. Source: the Short itself (YouTube · view and subscriber counts checked directly on 2026.7.24) When a 9,000-subscriber channel gets 2.8 million views, the audience did not come from the channel. It came from the algorithm. Old virality flowed downhill from big channels. Now the size of the source barely matters. A clipped 16 seconds runs on its own legs. Then it stepped off the screen. On May 22, the city of Geoje appointed all five members as official city ambassadors. A schoolyard catchphrase turned into municipal marketing in about two months. The short-form video of the appointment itself passed 1.2 million views. The song that climbed to No. 1 is not Deja Vu, the one playing above. It is LOVE ATTACK, released in August 2024, a year and a half before the meme existed. The trajectory, as reported: first entry on Melon's daily chart at No. 904. Seven months later, in March 2025, one brush with the bottom of the Top 100, then gone. After the meme took off, re-entry at No. 98 on May 28, 2026. Daily No. 3 on July 2. And at 10 p.m. on July 8, No. 1 on Melon's Top 100, roughly one year and eleven months after release. Melon measured the streaming surge at +2,019 percent and named RESCENE its standout act of the first half of 2026. For context, Melon is Korea's largest music streaming chart, the one that moves the industry. Sources: KJD, chart trajectory (2026.7.14 · note: its "about a year after release" line is an error, the March 2025 entry was about seven months in) · KJD, Melon standout (2026.7.9) · Complex (2026.7) The rest of the catalog rose with it. One July snapshot of the Top 100 had LOVE ATTACK at No. 1, Pretty Girl at No. 6, Deja Vu at No. 24, Runaway at No. 34. So the song I embedded is not the hero of this run; back then it was No. 24, and now it has climbed to No. 7. Deja Vu is the title track of the July 2025 single Dearest. Why I picked this particular one to embed, I said up top. Korean media files this under a familiar genre: the "small-agency miracle." The lineage runs through Beast and Infinite in the early 2010s, EXID and Brave Girls after that, and Fifty Fifty recently. Groups that broke through without a major label's promotion machine. But this case differs from its ancestors in one way. EXID had a fancam from a stage. Brave Girls had a concert video. RESCENE's fuel was roughly 1,500 videos the leader had quietly stacked on her personal channel over two years. The breakout did not happen on a stage the company built. It happened on a stage a member built alone. Source: KJD, "small-agency miracle" framing and the 1,500 videos (2026.7.14 · the lineage framing is this single article's) ## "We are also RESCENE" On Won's personal channel there is a video titled, roughly, "We are also RESCENE..." As the meme grew, that line became a catchphrase of its own. And this is where I stopped reading the case as a platform story and started reading it as a production story. Source: Won's personal channel, "We are also RESCENE..." (origin of the catchphrase · channel and title confirmed via oEmbed) A fan channel called SENO took that exact title and made an opening sequence for a RESCENE anime that does not exist. With a song on top. Press play and you get it. Another channel, SPOOP, redrew the group's whole story as animation. Here is that one too. Sources: SENO, "We are also RESCENE... | anime opening OP" · SPOOP, "Turned RESCENE's story into animation" (both fan-made · confirmed via oEmbed) A few years ago the ceiling on fan tributes was an edited fancam or a subtitled clip. An anime opening was studio-scale work. Almost no fan could carry the drawing, the in-betweening, the editing, and the music alone. Now this density of video comes out of one person's fan channel. Fan-made videos, and then something AI adds on top. Tools that make the previously hard possible have landed in the hands of the fandom. Neither creator published a making-of, so I will not claim which tools were used or how much. The direction is clear enough. The unit cost of derivative work is collapsing, and derivative work that is easier to make keeps a meme alive longer. Content breeds content faster, and it happens outside the label. ## A group built on scent Up top I said Deja Vu is the song that best captures RESCENE. Here is what that identity actually is. The name RESCENE fuses Scene and Scent: recall (RE) a scene through scent. The concept sits on what psychology calls the Proust effect, the way one smell can drag an entire memory back whole. The group, under the small agency The Muze Entertainment, debuted on March 26, 2024, and has run the concept from day one: each album gets a main fragrance, physical albums ship with scent cards you can actually smell. The pre-debut profile article, a month before debut, already led with fragrance in its headline. Sources: The Muze Entertainment, official artist page · News1, pre-debut profile, in Korean (2024.2.22) · concept description is the label's own official framing I said up top I am not just weak to scent. Change the scent and the same apartment becomes different places. When I catch my work room's scent somewhere it does not belong, the unfinished work comes back with it, and sometimes an unfinished person does too. This concept reads like it was designed by someone who knows in their body that smell carries memory. Which is why a title like Deja Vu does not sound like a coincidence. The familiar-on-first-listen feeling is part of the design. One line I owe you as an analyst, though. The source for all of this concept talk is the label's own official copy. Marketing text is the original document here, and that layer should stay visible while you read. Even so, one fact survives the discount: a second-year group at a small agency has held this identity steady the whole way. ## But nobody has counted the kids This piece started with a question from a kid. So the thing I most wanted to find was data on the youngest fans. And here I owe you honesty. I could not find it. This research produced no quantitative evidence for "popular among elementary and middle schoolers." A claim that Won herself described the fanbase stretching from grade-schoolers to men in their 50s failed cross-verification, so I dropped it. What remains is indirect: one Korean article noting the meme's spread among elementary and middle schoolers, the general fact that Shorts skews young, and the kid standing in front of me asking if I knew Geoje yaho. Source: MyDaily via Nate, in Korean (2026.5.14 · indirect signal) · no age-distribution data found as of this research This is the most interesting gap in the whole phenomenon. Everyone says the kids are driving it, and nobody has counted: no listening-age distribution, no school-level fieldwork, no challenge-hashtag tally. Adult chart data accumulates by the hour while the group that seems to carry the meme sits outside the statistics. Elementary and middle schoolers do not pay for Melon subscriptions, so they show up in charts late and blurry. The meme circulates in classrooms and the numbers register elsewhere. That mismatch is itself the research topic. ## Scoreboard - No. 904 → No. 1 · LOVE ATTACK's Melon trajectory, topping the Top 100 at 10 p.m. on July 8, 2026, about 23 months after release. (KJD · Melon) - +2,019% · Melon-measured streaming surge; named standout act of H1 2026. (Melon via KJD, 2026.7.9) - 311x · a 9,040-subscriber fan channel's 16-second Short at 2.8M views, as of 2026.7.24. (YouTube, checked directly) - About 1,500 · videos the leader stacked on her personal channel over two years. (KJD, 2026.7.14) - About 60 days · from the March meme spark to the May 22 Geoje city ambassadorship; the appointment short-form passed 1.2M views. (KNN · Gyeongnam Domin Ilbo) - 0 · public quantitative datasets on the meme's spread among children, as of this research. (checked directly) ## Closing Nothing about this case went by the existing playbook. The point of origin moved from company channels to a member's personal one. A two-year-old song beat the new releases, which means the content clock broke. An online meme became a city appointment in about two months. Fans, with tools lending a hand, built and offered up a full anime opening. And the group that appears to carry the spread, children, is invisible to the statistics. Each of those is a question on its own. Having them all land in one case is rare. If the meme cools in the second half of the year, half of this piece will age out. That is part of what makes it worth watching: the meme's lifespan, whether the catalog songs hold, and the age data someone will eventually count. I picked up this specimen because a kid quizzed me. Next time I see them I have my answer ready. Yes, I know Geoje yaho now. And while you were in class, RESCENE went to No. 1.
